Water is the elixir of life that is responsible for practically every single function in our body. Human bodies are built up of 70-80 billion cells which require water for metabolic activity, strong immunity, cellular function, maintaining the right pH balance. However, this is no way means guzzling down excess water. Just like dehydration is dangerous, over-hydration can pose serious health risks too. Over drinking water can also be toxic. It could lead to: 1. Dilution of body fluids and electrolytes so much that sodium and potassium levels become life threatening low. 2. Overworking of kidneys. 3. Increase total blood volume. 4. Dilute stomach acids and hinder digestion.
There is no magic number. It depends from individual to individual- based on age, height, weight, activity levels, climatic and geographical conditions, health and overall diet. However generally speaking, a normal healthy individual can maintain a water intake of 2.5-3 liters. Having said that, for a person who is overly active and sweats a lot (like a marathoner) or people who stay in a typically humid climate, may need to drink more water as compared to others.
Similarly, a person who drinks too much tea/coffee or alcohol, may need to drink more water to counter the effects of these diuretics. For a person; who eats plenty of fruits, vegetables, soups, vegetable juices, coconut water- he/she may not need to drink as much plain water as there is enough water through foods naturally going into their system. Water intake also varies with health conditions: 1. Kidney Cases: They are often on a restricted water intake. 2. UTI Cases: They may need to drink more than a recommended amount till the time they don’t heal because that helps in flushing out bad bacteria. 3. Conventional treatments/medicines/radiation/chemotherapy: These treatments create a lot of body heat and the patient may be asked to spike up their water intake.
Hydration is not about how much water you drink. It’s about how much water is actually reaching your cells. That’s called cellular hydration. Most of us drink water but are still dehydrated at the cellular level. Additionally, we chug and gulp water which is not the right way to drink water. There is an art of drinking water in order to hydrate the body at a cellular level. Water is supposed to be sipped slowly so that we get the worth of every sip and water truly reaches the cells rather than being flushed out of the system
It’s the preparation of water that involves lemon and pink salt and it’s alkaline, mineral loaded, hydrating and energy boosting. The presence of mineral rich salt helps to improve the osmotic pressure across you cellular membranes so that water enters into the cells.
Recipe for cellular hydration: 1 liter water +1 lemon squeezed + 1 tsp pink salt. Mix and consume in the morning. If you find it salty, add less salt. It’s absolutely refreshing, detoxifying and hydrates you at a cellular level.
